Totnes Museum Volunteers encourage visitors in, greet with a welcoming smile, mention that the house is 450 years old so be careful on the stairs, take part in training, clean the windows, work as a team, explain things, polish the display cases, audit the collection, are enthusiastic, chat to visitors, carry out research, write labels, file papers, ask questions, make discoveries, learn things, vacuum the floors, locate lost things, dust, answer questions, research, mop the floors when it rains, encourage visitor donations, use the till, pack items in boxes, make everyone feel as though their visit was worthwhile, have a great time. 

Why not join us?

If you would like to meet new people in a friendly environment and help inspire those around you while supporting Totnes Museum, volunteering with us could be the answer. Totnes Museum, which includes the Archive, is a charitable trust entirely run by volunteers and we are always looking for people to join our friendly team. You don't necessarily need experience - your enthusiasm and willingness to be involved is just as important.

There are several opportunities and we are flexible with the roles and time you can commit. When we are open to the public (from the beginning of April to the end of October) the main requirement is for front of house and stewarding the different galleries.  We're open for late night shopping in December and other special events so we always need stewards.

If you'd like to be working with objects in the collection, you'll need some museum experience or be willing to do some training and work with more experienced volunteers when they're available.

We're sorry, but at the moment we are unlikely to accept volunteers under 18. It might be worth asking though.
